Built in 1847, this fortress has watched over Whistler's mountains for nearly two centuries. Now? It's your home away from home.
Scottish engineer Malcolm Pyrestorm constructed this fortress as a trading post and refuge for travelers crossing the treacherous mountain passes. The stone walls you'll touch today? He laid 'em himself.
The Pyrestorm family converted their ancestral home into a lodge. Wealthy adventurers from Vancouver started making the journey up here for what they called "authentic mountain experiences." Times haven't changed much, honestly.
Got designated as a National Historic Site. That meant we couldn't tear down walls or mess with the original architecture - which turned out to be a blessing. Those stone corridors have character you just can't replicate.
After a careful five-year restoration, we reopened as Pyrestorm Citadel. We kept every original stone, every timber beam, every quirky corner - but added heated floors, spa facilities, and seriously comfortable beds. Best of both worlds.
We're still here, still standing strong. The fortress has survived earthquakes, harsh winters, and changing times. These days, we're hosting folks who appreciate history but don't wanna sacrifice comfort for it.
Look, we're not your typical hotel. You won't find cookie-cutter rooms or corporate vibes here. What you will find is authenticity mixed with some pretty sweet modern touches.
Original stone walls meet king-size beds and mountain views that'll make you forget your phone exists. Well, maybe not forget - but you'll definitely leave it on silent.
Thermal pools fed by natural mountain springs. Our ancestors used these same waters to soothe tired muscles after long journeys. You'll be using 'em after a day on the slopes.
Chef Marie sources ingredients from local BC farms and foragers. Her menu changes with the seasons 'cause that's how food should work. Try the venison - trust me on this one.
Daily tours through the original fortress sections. Our guide Tom knows every secret passage and can tell you stories that aren't in any history book. Some might even be true.

Stone Blocks (yes, we counted)
We've got about 85 people keeping this place running. Some have been here since the 2019 reopening, others just joined last season. What they all have in common? They genuinely care about making your stay memorable.
Front desk staff who remember your name, housekeeping that respects your privacy, kitchen crew that accommodates dietary needs without making you feel like a burden. That's just how we roll here.
Our adventure concierge, Jake, has climbed every peak within 50 kilometers. He'll set you up with the right guide, the right gear, and the right trail based on what you're actually capable of - not what you tell him you're capable of.
Being in a 178-year-old building means we're already practicing the ultimate form of sustainability - we didn't tear it down and build something new. But we go further than that.
Come see what nearly two centuries of mountain hospitality looks like.
